Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is psychotherapy, and how is it different from counselling?
Psychotherapy is a deeper, longer-term therapeutic process that explores the root causes of psychological distress, often examining patterns formed in early life and how they affect present-day functioning. Counselling tends to be shorter-term and more focused on specific presenting issues. At Mentis Heritage, our UKCP-accredited psychotherapists are trained to work at depth, addressing complex issues such as trauma, addiction, identity, and long-standing patterns of difficulty.
2. How do I know if I need therapy?
If you are experiencing persistent distress, difficulty functioning at work or in relationships, feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, or burnout, or are using substances to cope, therapy may be beneficial. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy — many people seek support to better understand themselves, process difficult experiences, or navigate major life transitions. As a medical professional, you may also recognise the signs in yourself that you would identify in patients.
3. Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in therapy is strictly confidential. There are very limited exceptions — specifically, if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or a legal obligation to disclose. These exceptions will be explained clearly at the start of therapy. We understand that confidentiality is particularly important for medical professionals, where concerns about professional reputation or GMC/NMC registration may create barriers to seeking help.
4. Will my employer or the GMC/NMC find out I am having therapy?
No. Your therapy is entirely private and confidential. We do not share information with employers, the GMC, NMC, GDC, or any regulatory body. The only exception would be if there was a serious and imminent risk of harm, which we would discuss with you first wherever possible. We understand the specific fears around professional registration that many healthcare workers carry, and we want to reassure you that seeking therapy does not jeopardise your career.
5. Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. We offer both in-person and online therapy via a secure, encrypted video platform. Online therapy is equally effective for most presentations and offers greater flexibility for busy clinical schedules. We can accommodate early morning, evening, and weekend appointments to work around shift patterns and on-call rotas.
6. How long does therapy last?
The duration of therapy varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from short-term focused work (8–16 sessions), whilst others engage in longer-term therapy over months or years. We will discuss your goals at the initial assessment and review progress regularly. There is no pressure to commit to a specific number of sessions upfront.
7. Do you offer out-of-hours appointments for shift workers?
Yes. We understand that healthcare schedules are unpredictable. Our therapists offer flexible, dedicated slots—including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends—to ensure you can access consistent care around rotating rotas and night shifts.
8. Why choose a culturally sensitive therapist over standard therapy?
In standard Western therapy models, the focus is entirely on the individual, which can sometimes conflict with or pathologise collectivistic South Asian family structures. At Mentis Heritage, you won't waste valuable session time explaining cultural nuances, family hierarchies, or systemic community pressures
